One of the most famous and prolific inventors of all time, Thomas Alva Edison had a tremendous influence on modern life inventing things such as the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera, as well as improving the telegraph and telephone.

Born on February 11th, 1847 to Sam and Nancy in Milan, Ohio, Edison was known as “Al” in his youth and was the youngest of seven children.  In his 84 years, he acquired an astounding 1,093 patents and besides being an inventor, Edison also managed to become a successful manufacturer and businessman.

In honor of his birthday, we want to remember him and hope that he can inspire you, your vision, your goals, and your aspirations. Edison once said: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

In this blog post, we will explore the essence of Edison’s wisdom – his principle of transforming inspiration into perspiration – and how you can apply it to your own entrepreneurial journey.

Understanding The Edison Principle

To truly grasp the Edison Principle, we need to delve into the psyche of the man who brought this concept to life: Thomas Edison. More than just an inventor, Edison embodied resilience and unwavering commitment. His iconic quote, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration,” highlights his belief in the power of effort in converting dreams into reality. His principle suggests that it’s the inception of an idea that starts the journey, but it’s the hard work and tenacity that actually navigates the path to success. While the idea is invaluable, it’s the dedication and hard work that turn it into something tangible that truly counts.

Igniting the Spark of Inspiration

The start of any entrepreneurial journey is often marked by a spark. It is a sudden rush of an idea that triggers your mind, or an unexpected flicker that presents a unique concept, solution or product. This spark could be born out of a personal need, something you see that the market lacks, or even a casual conversation that gets you thinking. It’s that moment when the light bulb turns on, signaling the birth of an idea that has the potential to make a significant impact. This electrifying spark signifies the 1% inspiration that Edison talks about, that launches your idea!

Transforming Inspiration into Perspiration

This is the stage where dreams take form, where inspiration transforms into perspiration – the Edison way. To fuel your idea into bigger things, you need to be prepared to dig deep and put in the hard work. This involves thorough market research, meticulous planning, constant experimentation, making errors, learning from them, and improving. There will be trials and errors and moments of self-doubt and setbacks. But it’s in the challenging moments that you are shaping your entrepreneurial path. The key is persistence and resilience. Edison’s 99% perspiration is about embracing the grind, keeping your eye on the prize, and pushing forward with unwavering dedication.
